5 Inexpensive Ways to Update Your Bedroom

Whether you have been in your current home for a few months or a few years, at some point you will want to change the look of your bedroom. Sure, you could spend thousands of dollars for a new look, but you don’t have to. Following are some very easy and inexpensive ways to update your bedroom. Color, texture and a designer look don’t have to break the bank.

Inexpensive Ways to Update Your Bedroom – #1 – Paint

Any decorating book you read, or any home improvement show you watch, will list paint as the most inexpensive way to improve and update the look of any room. Let’s say you already have the room the color you like, but it needs ‘something’. Why not do an accent wall.

An accent wall usually is the wall your bed is on. If you want to draw the attention and focus of the room to your bed, give that one wall a totally different look. If you have gray walls, paint the focus wall blue. If you have brown walls, do the focus wall in a deeper shade or lighter shade of the same brown. White walls are easy; pick your favorite shad for your focus wall. Painting only one wall saves times and money, while at the same time it creates a dramatic effect.

Inexpensive Ways to Update Your Bedroom – #2 – Dresser Scarves

My mother always used dresser scarves. Most of hers were counted cross stitch that she made many years ago. Since we tend to follow our mother’s lead I also use dresser scarves. The material does help to protect your furniture from scratches and spills. What I have started to experiment with is the use of table runners and place mats. The table runners are long enough for my dresser. Place mats are the perfect size for my night tables. Runners and place mats can be found in many stores and they come in a large variety of colors and patterns. They are not expensive and they will give a designer look to your bedroom. If you are into yard sales and estate sales you might be able to find some interesting vintage dresser scarves at good prices.

Inexpensive Ways to Update Your Bedroom – #3 – Scatter Rugs

Wall to wall carpet is expensive to replace so I am not suggesting that. Perhaps you have a worn spot or stain in the carpet. Why not use a scatter rug to cover the spot. If you have a worn spot on one side of the bed, use identical scatter rugs, one on each side of the bed, and no one will be the wiser. If the worn or stained spot is near to the wall, you can use a large wicker basket filled with magazine to cover the spot. Even if your carpet is in fine condition, a scatter rug or two will add depth and interest to the room.

Inexpensive Ways to Update Your Bedroom – #4 – Plants

The amount of light your bedroom gets will determine what kind of plants you should use. If you have a corner that just “needs something” and that corner gets filtered light you have an excellent spot for a palm tree. Palm trees are light and airy and give a very romantic feel to a room. Make sure to use the proper pot to avoid water marks on your carpet or floor. A hanging spider plant is also a light and airy type of plant and it requires very little care. Plants add color to any room but often people do not think of using them in the bedroom.

Inexpensive Ways to Update Your Bedroom – #5 – Throw Pillows

A new quilt and matching shams can run into lots of money. If your quilt and shams are in good shape but you would like to change them a bit – add some throw pillows. Mix up the textures and shapes to add depth. Try a pretty heart shaped throw pillow or a feminine lacy. You don’t have to spend a lot of money to get a new look.

There you have it, 5 inexpensive ways to update your bedroom. Close your eyes and picture your bedroom as it is. Now close your eyes and picture your bedroom with an accent wall, new throw pillows, designer look dresser scarves, along with a few scatter rugs and plants….looks nice right? Go for it, you won’t be sorry and you won’t be broke!
