Bed bugs are small, oval insects that feed on the blood of humans or animals. Although they are not capable of flying, they can quickly move over walls, ceilings, and floors. They may inconspicuously enter your home through couches, luggage, clothing, and any other item. Their flat bodies also allow them to fit into tiny cracks and holes, so they can easily find a perfect hiding place in your home. Although killing them on your own may take months of hard work, you can get rid of them for good by following these three simple steps.

Look for signs of infestation

The key to effective extermination is to recognize the signs of infestation as early as possible. At first, you may notice small bites on your skin or other signs before you finally see an actual bed bug. Try looking for small, reddish bumps on your legs and arms as well as tiny sears or blood stains in your box spring, pillows, and mattress. Egg shells, fecal spots, and musty odor from the scent glands of bed bugs are also common signs of an infestation.

Check common hiding places

These nasty pests do not only hide in beds. You can also find them in the tufts, seams, and creases of your mattresses or box springs. They also love hiding underneath couches, chairs, and edges of carpets or area rugs. Over time, they may also scatter through your bedroom and move into the crevices and edges of nightstands, dressers, window casings, loose wallpaper, and even between the folds of curtains and drapery. They live solely on animal and human blood so you may still have them regardless of how clean your home is.

Vacuum daily and wash bed linens

Vacuum every area of your home thoroughly. Turn box springs, upholstered furniture, and mattresses in all directions and pay attention to their crevices, seams, and folds. Once you have finished vacuuming every piece of furniture in your home, you can kill bed bugs by placing the vacuum bag in your freezer for no less than twenty-four hours. They are extremely sensitive to sudden changes in temperature so you have to consider washing your sheets, pillows, and linens in hot water. Steam cleaning is also a great method as long as you know how to do it properly.

To get the best results, you should also inspect every area in your home and caulk any cracks or crevices you will find. Seal up everything and consult pest control specialists for effective yet safe pesticides that you can use. Once you have followed these three simple tips, you can finally increase your chances of winning your battle against stubborn bed bugs.
