When you want to put yard décor for your backyard, you’ll need to be able to put together something that will make you feel at ease with your home and comfortable. These may include various figurines and fixtures which should be able to withstand weather because these are placed outdoors. You’ll want to check the designs that you have and want because you probably have a theme in mind already. Now, all you need to do is execute that idea in your head and push your imagination to be able to really make it work. All that you need is to be able to do is pick the ones you need and put them together.

Yard décor may work for the area outside your living room, patio, or eve your balcony. These may come in different sizes and styles which may fit whatever theme you have. Also, you will need to be able to select those that are tough and durable because they’ll be mostly placed outside where it may get wet and a lot of dirt. It is therefore important to know what maintenance practices you will have to do so that you can always keep it clean and new. Cleaning it will definitely prolong its life and design.

Some people even repaint their yard décor because most would really invest in them which is why they want to prolong what they bought for as long as possible. It is really important to be able to do this so that your items would always look pristine. If this is your practice then you can be somehow sure that those would always look like they’re new. Some people would even wash them every other week to make sure that they have done it right. Also, some make sure that the detergent and cloth that they will use will not damage the paint or material that these are made of because they want to make sure that it looks like they have just bought them yesterday.

Many people also buy different yard décor for a variety of occasions where they just make sure to keep them clean and keep them in a good storage space. For example, when it’s Halloween; they will bring out those items that will make their home for this occasion. After that occasion is over, then the owner would just clean and pack them back to the storage.

There are so many choices to choose from, and if you don’t know a lot about plants or landscaping, it’s often difficult to choose the perfect landscaping plants for your yard. There is a lot of great advice available on the internet and in landscaping books to help you narrow down some tough decisions and really make the most of landscaping plants to add a bit of magic to your yard.

The Right Landscaping Plants

There are many factors to considering when choosing the right landscaping plants. Where you are geographically has a huge impact on which plants will thrive in your yard. You may love Birds of Paradise, but that plant probably won’t grow well in your Canadian yard. Taking the time to research which plants will really thrive in your particular yard will save a lot of time and trouble.

Even if you live in a warm climate, tropical flowers may not be able to survive if you happen to have a harsh winter. Tropic flowers tend to thrive in year-round temperate climates. You can better monitor the temperatures of your tropical flowers if they are kept inside, in which case they can’t be considered as a staple of your landscaping plants.

Hardy flowering plants such as the Impatiens of Chrysanthemums are excellent choices if you live in a climate with very distinct seasons. Your local garden center is a great place to find out about all the different flowering plants that work well in your corner of the world. They can also fill you in on the basis of plant care including watering.

Another thing to keep in mind when researching the right landscaping plants is what functions you want your plants to provide. You made only have an aesthetic appeal in mind, but plants can serve other purposes as well. There are also many aspects to what you prefer aesthetically. Do you want a lot of flowering plants and colors, or would you prefer some elegant green foliage? Taking the time to consider the aesthetics qualities of the right plants and how different landscaping plants may or may not work together harmoniously is essential if you seek a beautiful yard.

Landscaping plants are indeed often more than just a pretty face. They can provide much needed privacy. The ivy vine is a great plant to consider if privacy is your goal because it can easily conceal the spaces in a fence. Ivy is also an attractive plant, so it can serve dual functions in your yard, providing both beauty and privacy. If you decide to use ivy as one of your landscaping plants, remember to keep it in check because it may grow too fast and overtake everything in your yard. It may grow to reach walls that you didn’t actually want it to touch. Just remember to keep a careful eye on the ivy vine, and the two of you can have a very symbiotic relationship.

Contemporary garden design came about as land areas for gardening became less and less for house owners in the urban areas. With the small land areas, many landowners who are urbanites will prefer a modern look to their garden, just to match their personality and lifestyle. Cultivating plants for eating is not in their minds. They rather spend their time maintaining their cool-looking garden. So that would mean a fresh, modern and energetic landscaping.

But how do you classify a contemporary design? Well for one, you will know once you see it. The most important characteristics for a modern design is the use of modern elements such as cement and marble slabs.

The use of cement especially as retaining container for some part of the garden immediately gives the garden a modern face. Those with big budget can have an artificial waterfall oozing out of the vertical marble slab.

Many of the new designs highlights the space, no matter how little there is available. Plants are pushed to the edge and the middle area is filled with flat green grass, with stone or wood walkways across the space. The walkways can be covered with large stones with the flat side up or small pebbles of stones mixed with cement. Plank of woods being piled together and being placed on the same level as the ground is another good example.

For small areas, not that many variety of plants are used. Even the number of colors present are minimised to avoid a messy range of colors.

Garden walkway lighting is another common element and majority used are the small ones to light the ground. Not many are needed though.

Shapes also play a part, rectangles and/or squares are used for stone slabs for walkways and for the vase for small high plants. A hard-edge design is commonly used for the walkway paths.

So do you want to convert your small vegetable garden to a modern garden?

If you think you cannot come up with any good contemporary design for your garden, many young and fresh landscape professionals can give you good idea after checking out your garden space and also some input from you. Be prepared to have a generous budget though.

Of course, you can also do a google search and just look at what other people are doing with their gardens. That should give you some inspiration and ideas to start off with. The most important thing to remember is not to do too much and just keep it simple.

You can also check out our website to have a look at different samples of garden design, contemporary and not.

These trees can adapt to most conditions and are also pest free. They also have beautiful colors and provide excellent shade. Another excellent option is maple trees which have fascinating colors throughout the year and adapt well to most locations. If you don’t want to use trees for borders you can consider using shrubs.

When you want landscaping plants with a creative design then you should choose shrubs. Shrubs look well maintained and can bring a landscape design together. You still have much option to choose from when it comes to shrubs so you will need to pick on that works well for your garden area. For most areas an excellent shrub choice is the hydrangeas. IN the summer these have great flowers and green foliage while also producing excellent fall color when the seasons change.

Types of Landscaping Shrubs:

When it comes to choosing landscaping shrubs the first thing you have to consider is what will grow best in the area you are landscaping. All of them are different when it comes to the things that make them grow. Consider some shrubs can be very expensive this is why it is important to do your research first. You don’t want to spend a lot of money on a plant that looks nice but will die within a year because it can’t grow in the area you place it.

Consider your landscaped area and how much sun and shade you are going to have. Then choose landscaping shrubs that will work within those conditions. After limiting the list of plants to those that will work in your area then you should select plants that compliment your overall landscaping idea and ones that match your project plan. This way you will not only have a unified landscape design, but you will also have landscaping shrubs that will last for a long time to come with proper care.

Finalize After proper Planning:

When it comes to landscaping shrubs you want ones that will be easy to care for while still being beautiful. There are many shrubs available when it comes to choosing something that will blend with your landscaping design. Where you are landscaping will have a large influence on the plants and shrubs you choose to use. Although before choosing your landscaping plants there are a few things you need to consider. Then once you know which landscaping plants you need you can go to your home and garden center to find what appeals to you.

There are many types of landscaping trees and shrubs that are ornamental. This means they add color and beauty to your landscape design. Japanese Red Maples provide gorgeous deep red foliage which sometimes seems to be more of a purple color. They grow slowly but the end result is a beautiful ornamental tree that anybody would be proud to have in their yard.

You have to think of growing plants and flowers vertically if you have a balcony garden or a small patio or rooftop garden. It will be easy to plan a lush wall of vegetables, flowers or foliage plants. Fences and wall plantings are very common examples of vertical gardening and are worth trying. You can use your imagination and try out different styles and do not forget to use your landscaping ideas

You can buy both structures and installations for movable wall units from various companies. You can also use this for making an indoor wall covered with lively plants and flowers. You have to make sure you give proper attention to the colors. Both, the color of leaves and flowers are very important. Your likings combined with your imagination should make wonders in your garden and home.

There are various benefits of using this type of gardening:

1. More plants, vegetables and flowers can be grown in a vertical structure using less ground space.
2. The vertical design can be useful for people with difficulty in walking around a large garden.
3. Gardening on vertical walls, trellis and arbor can give them more exposure to sun light and air.
4. Vertical garden wall structures can be used to obtain privacy for your areas.
5. These types of vertical garden structures can be used to provide shade for you to a certain extent.

Good luck for your beautiful vertical garden and watch your small space garden come to life with your landscaping ideas.

As winter approaches, many home gardeners in Mediterranean and similar climates tend to assume that the chores and tasks associated with lawn care are over for the year, and that they can forget about lawn treatment until the following spring. It is easy to see why, as most of the grass varieties used in such areas are dormant during the winter, while feeding and dethatching in the autumn seem to make little difference to the lawn’s appearance at this time.

However, feeding, if carried out properly, and dethatching where appropriate, help the lawn to recover quicker and grow better at the start of the following year’s growing season. What then is correct feeding; when is dethatching necessary, and how should it be done?

Lawn Food

Lawn fertilizer applied at the end of the summer or the beginning of autumn, can contain a relatively high percentage of nitrogen, in order to take advantage of the remaining 6 weeks or so of growing season, before the onset of winter. The closer to winter however, the presence of available nitrogen becomes increasingly irrelevant. In both cases though, it is best to apply a lawn fertilizer containing a high percentage of potassium, as this encourages satisfactory root development, whose benefits as mentioned, will be visible in the spring and help in creating a lawn that is hardier to pests, disease and drought.

The easiest method of feeding is to use a slow release fertilizer. In the fall, the percentages of nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium, expressed from left to right on the package as N-P-K, should be low in nitrogen and phosphorous, (N and P respectively) but high in Potassium (K). Alternatively, one can use an organic fertilizer, although bulky organic matter, such as compost, while essential for the rest of the garden, is less desirable for lawn care, as it is difficult to spread evenly, and is liable to exacerbate the thatch problem.

Dethatching Lawns

Removing the thatch that has built up through the summer is one of the most important tasks in lawn care and treatment, particularly with many of the species used in hot, dry, summer climates such as Bermuda, Zoysia, and Kikuyu varieties. While many home gardeners are aware that dethatching is essential in the spring, less know that it is desirable in the autumn too, as it significantly improves the rate at which rainwater percolates through the soil. It needs to be carried out far less aggressively than in the spring, and only on those species that recover from the treatment. Great care must be exercised with grasses like Buffalo, or St.Augustine, which can be irreparably damaged by over-zealous dethatching.

Over Seeding Lawns

An excellent way of greening up a perennial lawn that becomes dormant in the winter is to over seed with a variety that grows well in the winter, only to fade away through the summer. For this purpose, dethatching the lawn prior to spreading the seeds, greatly aids in increasing the germination rate, which helps the lawn look a lot fuller and greener through the winter.

It forms the structure and backbone around which everything else revolves. Most gardens are planned with little thought given to leaves and the contributions they make. Once the excitement and diversity of the many different leaf textures, colors, shapes and sizes are appreciated it soon becomes obvious that there are wonderful plant associations and combinations to be explored. As well as offering a background against which flowers and other garden ornaments can be displayed. Foliage provides interest in its own right.

To achieve garden tranquility, use a variety of foliage colors and limit your flower colors to quiet tones with an occasional striking accent. Soft textures and feathery foliage are very restful and they create soothing sounds when they rustle gently in the breeze. Colorful flower gardens can sometimes be too stimulating – when there are many varieties to look at, your eyes dart everywhere. So for tranquility in your garden, mix a few colorful flowers with a wide variety of foliage that requires little maintenance.

Blooms come and go, but foliage remains all season. You can take hostas, ferns and many other foliage plants and place them among classical architectural elements in ways that are both playful and soothing.

Perennial vines will help you get quick results. You can use the big leaved vines to provide a backdrop for garden flowers or to screen unsightly views. For year round green foliage, use vines like English Ivy. To get rich fall colors, choose vines like Lowe’s Ivy and Boston Ivy.

We’re naturally attracted to bright flowers especially in summer gardens. But garden designers will tell you there’s something to be said for subtlety. Especially, those plants that earn their keep with understated differences in color and texture.

The garden is evolving into a sanctuary. People everywhere are discovering the value of outdoor living spaces as refuges from the stress of everyday life. Create a sense of calm with a flowerbed filled with muted, serene colors such as soft pastels. Be sure to choose low maintenance plants that can be enjoyed most of the year. Create a natural habitat for butterflies, birds and other small wildlife. Add food sources such as berries or nuts and nesting boxes. Add sound to your outdoor living space. Sound soothes the senses, add water features or wind chime. The trickle of water is especially calming and you can easily add a simple tabletop fountain.

Leaves and pine straw can be used to advantage for mulching shrubs. Cap the loose leaf mulch with a light layer of pine straw to keep it from blowing away in windy weather.

Continue feeding through the fall but in a different way. Use slow-acting fertilizers such as manures, bone-meal or superphosphate. Use the latter in soils that are already non-acid. Manure on shrub borders, rose beds and bulb plantings will slowly feed the developing root systems through the winter but rake the manure from tulip beds in early spring as soon as the leaves show through the ground. Manure in direct contact with the foliage causes disease.

Vegetables – As soon as beans, corn or other crops are harvested destroy the old plants. Then, dig and pulverize well the vacated rows for fall and winter crops. Add a complete plant food. Use one pound for each 25 feet of row or 4 pounds for each 100 square feet. October planting should include carrots, leek, lettuce, kale, rape, spinach, mustard, Swiss chard, radish and turnips.

For the Lower South plant beets, broccoli, cabbage, carrots, celery, collards, cauliflower, Swiss chard, endive, kale, kohl rabi, lettuce, onion, radish, rutabaga, spinach.

Southern experiment stations have been testing varieties of head lettuce. Great Lakes and Imperial 847 are two of the best both for commercial culture and home gardens and also for arboricola standard. For novelty, try Bibb for crisp, delicious, dark green heads, small enough for individual servings. I have used it as border plantings.

Plants to set out now include cabbage and collards and if you can get them, broccoli and lettuce.

Herb gardens are becoming popular. Get a good book on herb culture and another that tells how to use herbs in cooking. Then, select the types you want to grow, and plant the seeds this month. Here are some that do well in the South: horehound, lavender, sweet marjoram, rosemary, thyme, balm, summer savory, anise, sage, sweet basil, borage, caraway, coriander and sweet fennel.

Landscaping is any activity that develops an area into something attractive and beautiful. They said that it can add value to ones properties. For instance when you want to sell your house, potential buyers will be encouraged in buying if they are attracted to the house’s landscape. While there are already many professional landscapers, home owners would tend to make their own landscaping designs, either to save money or to fill their leisure time.

Now, many home owners who dare to develop their own front yard only knows how to take care of plants and preserve structures on their lawns but lack the ideas of how to layout landscaping designs. Thus, let’s discuss points to consider in order to make designing easier.

The first things to consider are the tools or equipments you will possibly use during landscaping as well as during maintenance. Are these tools readily available? Or do your designs promote easy access to the equipments you will be using? It is important that you ask these kinds of questions so that you can avoid uprooting a plant or landscape structure because of any troubles with the equipments.

Next is the highlight of your landscape and the plants and other features you want to see in your lawn. The highlight should draw the attention of the viewers, and it should stand out among others. It has to be congruent and proportionate to other features of the landscape. Meanwhile, plants and other features should complement each other in color, size, and form. For instance, if you want your lawn to stimulate a cool feeling, then you can use cool colors of the flowers and structures (like blue and purple).

Still other points to consider are the shapes and movement of your landscape. It is better to incorporate curves in your landscaping designs, like amoeba-shaped flower bed. Movement pertains to plants that would surely sway by blowing winds, and also to flowers that attract birds and butterflies. All of these contribute movements to your landscape, which will make it livelier. Landscapes which lack movements are said to be as dead as a painting and kind of boring.

So, as you can see, making a layout for your landscape is not really hard, especially if you get ideas to start with. Once you get an idea, all other things will just pour out from your creative imagination. Just remember not to limit yourself in designing your lawns. And if you want to be sure, you can ask professional help anyway.
