Choosing A Carpet

Contemporary carpet and RugsBuying carpets is a big job: they will form a key element of your home decor and may remain there for up to a decade. Versatility is important, as while your other home furnishings may change, your carpets likely will not, and so you want to make a choice that will suit a variety of styles, periods, colours and textures that be placed on top of or around your new carpets.

In terms of choosing a carpet fabric, comfort, durability and style are the factors that should influence your decision. You can expect to pay between £20 and £40 per square meter of carpet, depending on the quality of the fabric. Higher quality fabrics stand up better to carpet steam cleaning and will generally bring you lower carpet cleaning prices. Regular cleaning will ensure the longevity of your carpets and save you money otherwise spent on replacement or refurbishment. Nylon and wool are excellent carpet fabrics: both have good stain resistance and are easy to clean, though you will pay slightly more for wool. This is not only because it is a natural fabric, but also because it is more comfortable to walk on and soft to the touch.

Pile refers to the way yarn is woven onto the backing of a carpet. Loop pile carpets, such as Berber, generally last a long time and are suitable for high traffic areas like sitting rooms or dining areas. If you are replacing an old carpet, in addition to selecting the proper pile and fabric for your new carpet, you should also think about replacing the carpet’s underlay. Underlay is frequently subject to mold, dirt, dust and other pathogens that have made their way through the upper layer of the carpet. Not only is replacing your underlay a healthy option, it will also give an added spring to your step, which is the feeling most people associate and enjoy about new carpets.
