Are you the type of person that’s filled with creative ideas? Do you enjoy finding a new use for everyday items? If so, you can use that creative flair to decorate your home! Here are a few crafty home decorating ideas that can be used to make your child’s bedroom unique.

Infants & Toddlers

Decorative Outlets & Light Switches – If the idea of hanging wallpaper all over the room doesn’t appeal to you, here’s a decorating idea that you’ll like. Add a little print and color to your baby’s bedroom by covering just the electrical outlets and light switches with themed wallpaper. One roll of wallpaper will be enough to cover all the switch plates in your child’s room, and you’ll spend less than $ 15.00! All you’ll need to do is remove the switch plates and sand them lightly with fine grit sandpaper. Then, wet the wallpaper according to package directions and position it over the plate. Use an X-Acto knife to cut around the holes and fold the excess paper behind the plate. Smooth out any air bubbles and allow your new switch plate to dry completely before putting it back on the wall.

Baby Blanket Valance – Make a quick window treatment for baby’s room with NO SEWING required! To make these crafts for kids rooms, you’ll simply need to attach a wooden curtain rod to the window and tie several same-pattern, or coordinating pattern, receiving blankets to the rod. Place the blankets roughly 1″ apart from each other and allow them to hang down vertically to cover the window. These adorable blankets can be removed when your child grows into toddler age and replaced with character-themed scarves, bandanas, tulle, pillowcases, or with the fabric of your choice.

Elementary School

Handprint Artwork – When you’re trying to come up with decorating ideas for kids rooms, don’t forget to include the child in the fun! When your child reaches elementary school, they can play a big part in decorating ideas for their own rooms. Allow them to help make fun handprint artwork and get a little messy in the process. Purchase heavy-duty cardstock paper and have the children dip their hands in latex paint and press their handprints on the paper. With a different color paint, allow them to write their names on the paper above their handprint and then allow it to dry completely. Hang the artwork in the children’s bedroom.

Handprint Wallborder – You can also make a wall border using your child’s handprints, which will accent the artwork. Use a carpenter’s level and draw a line (lightly) with pencil on the wall at 36″ height. Then, draw a small notch every 4″ on the wall. Place 3 different latex paint colors in separate paint trays and have your child dip their hands in one color of paint and press their handprint on the wall at every third notch. When that color is finished, wash off your child’s hand and let them continue with a new color, and so on until the wall border is complete.

Tweens & Teens

Skateboard Shelf – These unique skateboard shelves are sure to be a hit in any tween or teen bedroom. Simply purchase two ‘L’ brackets and screw one end of each to the underside of the skateboard. Then, screw the other end into the wall. Voila! You have a quick and easy shelf!

Message Board – Make a unique place for your teen to write messages or pinup photos and other mementos. To make, simply find a large decorative mirror at a flea market or antique store and remove the glass. Keep the heavy-duty cardboard backing in place. Spray paint one side with chalkboard paint and cover the other cork sheets (both products are available at your local home improvement store). Now, your child has a unique area to keep photos, ribbons, pictures, and other items, AND a spot to write on.
