Underfloor heating is growing in popularity because it has many advantages over the traditional form of heating, such as: low installation cost and no maintenance costs. The heat is spread evenly over the whole room instead of being centered around a radiator or a fireplace, and because radiant heat is used, it reduces the airborne circulation of dust and house mites, which is ideal for asthma sufferers.

The commercial sector has increased its use of underfloor heating, and since the late 1990’s there has been a 25% yearly increase in demand for this heating system. High-profile buildings throughout the UK have had underfloor heating installed, such as: the Scottish Parliament building, Greenwich Museum, the British Museum, the Imperial Museum and Canary Wharf.

In most cases, underfloor heating can be the primary source of heating in a home that is adequately insulated. It is also advisable to add floor insulation when the underfloor heating is installed, to prevent heat loss into the sub-floor, otherwise more energy will be used to heat the room.

There are generally two different types of underfloor heating: warm water (wet) systems, or electric (dry) systems. Today’s homes mainly use the electric system, as the electric cables are located directly under the floor and heat the floor quickly, thus making them more efficient and cheaper to run than the wet system. The electric cables are usually installed onto an insulation board and covered directly with the floor covering of your choice. The temperature control for each room is made easy by a programmable digital thermostat.

Underfloor heating can be used in every room in your home, including the conservatory and the bathroom. Installing underfloor heating in the conservatory allows you to enjoy your conservatory all year round, and in the bathroom, after you’ve bathed, you can step out of your bath onto a lovely warm floor. You’ll have family and friends queuing up to bathe so they experience your flooring!

Once underfloor heating is installed it can enhance the appearance of a room, because there aren’t any unsightly radiators taking up wall space. It allows you freedom of choice for furniture location, as you don’t have any radiators to avoid. In public places, it can improve health and safety because there aren’t any hot pipes or sharp surfaces to cause a health hazard.

Underfloor heating can be used with wooden and concrete flooring and with different types of floor covering, such as: stone, tile, wood, laminate and vinyl. For small to medium sized rooms, the underfloor heating can be fitted on a DIY basis. The underfloor cable heating mats come with full installation instructions but it is strongly advised a qualified electrician attaches the cable heating system to the household electrical mains. If the thought of doing DIY makes your hair stand on end, or you have a large area that needs underfloor heating, the system can be installed by a company that specialises in this system. The internet has made it easy to gather information about underfloor heating, and to find a company who are experts in their field.

Underfloor heating is not a new phenomenon. Wealthy Romans first used underfloor heating in their homes; but their system did not survive the passage of time. In Korea, around 37 B.C – A.D 668 the Koreans created an underfloor heating system, called an ondol (meaning ‘warm stone’) and this system is still used in some modern Korean homes.

Underfloor heating is the way forward to improve your home and business.

Garage Flooring Ideas: Epoxy

Simplifying the spring cleaning of your garage flooring, in fact, can begin on the day you choose the material which will be used to construct your garage flooring. If you are committed to having a concrete garage floor, you can save yourself a significant amount of cleaning effort by coating the concrete with epoxy. There is an epoxy finish specifically formulated for concrete floors, and using it is by far the easiest way to protect your garage flooring.

If you mistakenly use some other grade of epoxy to coat your garage floor, you may be unhappily surprised to see the coating begin to peel. Epoxy coating for concrete doesn’t cost much, will protect the garage flooring, and most importantly, will make cleaning up those messy and greasy garage spills a breeze. Even if you decide to go with a clear, and not colored, epoxy coat for your garage flooring, you will give your garage a much brighter look.

Garage Flooring Ideas: Paint

You can, of course, decide to spruce up your garage flooring at spring cleaning time by giving it a fresh coat of concrete paint, but doing so will require you to remove all the dirty and grease from the flooring beforehand. There is, unfortunately, no way to let the paint cover up those stains and splotches so that you don’t have to spend time scrubbing them into oblivion. And your garage flooring can cover a significant area, so be very sure that you have the determination to finish what you start.

Garage Flooring Ideas: Floor Mats

If the work involved in applying a coat of paint or epoxy to your garage flooring simply seems like more work than you can handle, you can give your garage an instant “just-spring-cleaned” look with a floor mat. You can use the floor mat to cover the dirt, grease, and spills left from your earlier work in the garage, and to protect t he garage flooring in the future.

Floor mats are also excellent for reducing condensation in the garage, and because they do not conduct electricity, make the garage a safer place. They are available in numerous colors and designs, and are as attractive as they are practical.

Other Garage Flooring Ideas

Your garage flooring ideas, however, may have nothing to do with spring cleaning. Millions of homeowners have made their garage into storage units, leaving their cars parked outside. If you are among their number, you best solution to easy-care garage flooring might be to simply carpet or tile your garage floor so that it is both comfortable and easy to clean. There are plenty of garage flooring ideas which can make your spring cleaning tasks easier.

Determine If You Need A New Mattress. One question with which we are always approached is, “How do I know if I need a new mattress?” The answer is not always an easy one to answer. You can tell when you need a new car because your old one starts breaking down more often. You can tell that you need a new television if your old one won’t turn on. With your mattress, however, such visible, physical signs of needing a replacement are less obvious. In fact your mattress may look as good as the day you bought it, but its not the looks that counts. Mattresses are designed to alleviate the pressure put on your back, shoulders, neck and hips while you sleep. Your mattress should be replaced when it’s no longer providing adequate support for any of these critical areas of your body. In order to determine whether your mattress is in need of a replacement ask yourself these questions:

1.Is the mattress more then 7 years old?

2.Do you wake up with back, neck, shoulder, or hip pain?

3.Do you spend more than 10-15 minutes tossing and turning before you can get to sleep?

4.Do you frequently experience “dead” legs or arms when you wake up?

5.Is your mattress sagging, lumpy, starting to come apart or showing visible signs of wear?

6.Have you recently noticed that other beds (at a mattress store, hotel, friend/family member’s house) are more comfortable than your own?

While the life of a mattress depends on it’s material and how well it was manufactured, if you answered “yes” to Question 1, then chances that its time to start looking for a replacement. We should note that a manufacturer’s warranty does not necessarily guarantee that your mattress will continue to provide adequate support for the length of the warrantee. Usually a warranty simply means that a mattress manufacturer guarantee’s against defects in quality. However, warranties do differ from one manufacturer to another, so be sure to read up on what the manufacturer of your current mattress has agreed to before purchasing a new mattress. If you answered “no” to Question 1, but “yes” to some of the other questions asked, then your bed may be new enough that it’s not worn out, but it sounds like its not providing you with enough of or the right kind of support. There may also be special cases that warrant the purchase of a new mattress, such as when floods or damp conditions cause your bed to develop harmful mildew or mold.

Once you’ve determined that you’d be benefit from a new mattress, the next step involves making several key decisions that will help determine the mattress you’ll go shopping for.

Determine What Size Mattress Is Right For You. Deciding what size mattress you need may be fairly straight forward. If you’re simply replacing an existing mattress your decision is frequently limited by the size of the bed frame you’re using. If you’re looking to purchase a new mattress and frame here are some things you will want to consider:

1.How much space is there in the bedroom for a mattress?

2.How many people will be sleeping in the bed?

3.How satisfied were the people sleeping in the bed with the amount of space they had?

4.How much will it cost to upgrade to a larger bed, or how much will saved by purchasing a smaller mattress (not only the cost of the mattress, but also the sheets and bedding)?

While mattress sizes can vary some, here are typical mattress sizes:

Mattress Name	Dimensions (Width x Length)

Twin 39″ x 75″

Twin XL 39″ x 80″

Full 54″ x 75″

Full XL 54″ x 80″

Queen 60″ x 80″

King 76″ x 80″

California King	72″ x 84″

Determine What Type Of Mattress You Need. Beds have come along way since the single coil mattress. Mattresses now include a variety of new technologies and are frequently hybrids of two or more types of material. When shopping for a new mattress there are a couple things to keep in mind. First, you’ll want to buy the best value, not the least expensive. An inexpensive mattress may save you money up front but cost you a fortune in chiropractor costs in the future. Similarly, the most expensive bed on the market may not be providing you with the right kind or right amount of support and/or comfort. Second, if you’re going to be sharing your bed with someone else, make sure you bring them with you when you go shopping.

The mattress you find most comfortable may not be the most comfortable for your partner. If that’s the case you’ll want to find a mattress you can both agree is suitable, even if it’s not your first choice. To properly evaluate each possibility you should lay on the mattress the same way as you’ll be sleeping each night. Be sure to lay on the mattress for at least a few minutes. Some of the materials used in mattresses respond to both weight and heat, and can take several minutes to fully adjust to your body. If you move quickly from one bed to another you may be missing out on all a mattress has to offer. Finally be sure to learn as much about the advantages and disadvantages of each mattress material. To give you a starting point we will cover the most significant features of each material below.

Coil Mattresses:

Coil mattresses rely on steel coils that are tempered to give them additional strength and durability. The coils can be placed in a variety of different configurations to provide additional support to specific areas of the bed. A new coil spring beds is firm and is best at providing support for those who sleep on their back. In addition to being one of the more inexpensive mattress options on the market, coil springs are also easy to maintain. Regularly flipping the mattress helps prevent sagging, and ensures that you will get the most life out of your purchase. However, coil mattresses have a shorter lifespan than some of the other options out there. They can begin to sag within a year and wear out within 5 to 7 years. If those using the bed sleep on their sides, the mattress exerts greater pressure on the shoulders and hips causing spinal misalignment, which can lead to back and neck pain.

Visco Elastic/Memory Foam Mattresses:

Originally developed by NASA to make the pressure of space shuttle lift-offs more bearable, the foam has seen drastic reductions in price in recent years and is now a popular mattress material. The material gets its name from its ability to conform to the shape of an object and retain that shape for a period of time. While visco-elastic beds are typically more expensive than their coil counterparts, the quality can vary widely and is one of the main contributors to its price. Good quality memory foam means a firm bed that will evenly distribute your weight regardless of how you sleep. Some memory foams also respond to heat by becoming even more soft. Memory foam has lifespans between 10 and 20 years depending on quality. For those who have never owned a visco-elastic foam bed before there is typically a period of getting used to the “weightless” feeling the bed induces. New memory foam mattress owners may also notice a strong odor. While the odor does fade with time, it can continue to cause irritation, so be on the lookout for complaints from those sleeping on the bed. Also, memory foam by nature retains heat which some users find uncomfortable.

Waterbed Mattresses

Although waterbeds were first conceived in the late 1800s the modern bed that we’re familiar with was developed in 1968. Waterbeds were initially popular for their ability to be heated (which was popular in colder climates) and for their ability to relieve pressure from the spine as the water in the bed conformed to the shape of the person using it. However, this same “free flow” design that relieves spinal pressure also results in waves being created each time weight is shifted on the bed. These waves can be distracting and can interrupt sleep. Waterbeds are difficult to move and are also prone to leaks, but last longer than most coil mattresses and are dust mite free.

Air Chamber Mattresses

Air mattresses come in a variety of designs and levels of quality. However, the driving principle of an air mattress is (as the name implies) that you inflate the mattress with an air pump to a level you find comfortable. Whether you’re using a simple, single chamber mattress or a more advanced multi-chambered bed, you’re able to control how firm the bed is by how much air you pump into the bed. The air in air mattresses behaves much in the same was as the water in waterbeds. The air in the mattress conforms to the shape of the body and helps to reduce the amount of pressure put on the spine. While air mattresses have a typical lifespan of 10+ years, there are more parts that can wear out and caues the mattress to loose its ability to provide adequate support and comfort.

Intelli-Gel Mattresses

Another recently developed technology that is being adapted to a number of products – everything from shoe insoles to backpack straps to hunting equipment to mattresses. Intelligel is different from other bedding materials because it works on a column buckling principle. Most other mattresses provide support by pushing against those protruding areas of the body. Intelli-Gel is different. Columns of elastic gel are placed next to each other across the mattress surface. The columns are designed to stand until a certain amount of weight is placed on them. When the columns’ weight limit is reached the columns buckle, and becomes soft, while columns around the area remain firm and supportive. The result ends up being a bedding surface that is firm, supportive and comfortable. Also, because the Intelligel is broken into columns it doesn’t retain heat like memory foam. Intelligel is used as the main material in some mattresses and is combined with coils, memory foam, and air chambers in others.

A couple other things to consider when looking at the different mattress options that are available is the mattress’s warranty and whether the mattress comes with a foundation. As mentioned above, a mattress’s warranty does not guarantee its useful life, but it does protect against manufacturing defects. Typical warranties run between 10 and 15 years and may last upwards of 20 years. Be sure to read what the warranty does and doesn’t cover as it may save you time, money and headaches in the future. The foundation of your bed is an important part of how well you sleep each night. Chances are that if your mattress needs a replacement, your foundation does too. Some manufacturers will include a new foundation with the purchase of a mattress. If they don’t be sure to ask the manufacturer which foundation will work best with your mattress as foundations and mattresses are commonly paired to provide you with the best sleeping experience possible.

Dispose of your old mattress. If you’ve determined you need a new mattress because you are no longer receiving the support you need, then the last thing you should be doing is passing that discomfort on to someone else. Rather than selling your mattress or passing it on to a family member or friend, check to see if the purchase of your new bed includes some sort of disposal for your old mattress. Frequently, the folks who deliver your new mattress will be able to take away your old bed. If you’re embarrassed by the condition of an old, worn out mattress, you can use an old bed sheet as an inexpensive solution. Simply cover the old mattress with the old bed sheet, send it off and enjoy your new bed!

Determine what new accessories you’ll need for your new bed. To further improve the support you get while you sleep you may also want to consider a new pillow. Like mattresses, pillows are also made in a variety of materials. Besides traditional feather and down, pillows now also incorporate combinations of latex rubber, memory foam, air chambers, Intelli-gel and more. Finding a pillow to compliment the comfort your new bed provides will help turn your night’s sleep from good to great. Also, depending on the size mattress you purchased you purchased you may need new bedding. While a mattress’s size is fairly standard in terms of its length and width, there are a variety of mattress depths being used to incorporate some of the new materials we’ve discussed. By sure to check the depth of your new bed to determine whether you’ll need deep pocket sheets or larger blankets.

Log cabin types

A log cabin is both attractive and cheaper than any traditional home. Different log cabins are built from logs with varied thickness as thick logs are used in large cabins to add extra strength and insulation. The type of logs used in the log cabin give a different appeal to the log cabin home. There are two types of logs, one is the rough cut round logs and the other one is milled logs which easily fit together due to their uniformity. Now pre-milled logs come in kit form so building a log cabin is both cheap as well as enjoyable task.

Building log cabin

Earlier the log cabins were built like wooden fences by setting different sized logs perpendicularly in a gutter so as to form the wall of the cabin. But now log cabins are formed by placing the logs parallel to each other and connecting their last part with notches. The log cabins can be built by any construction company or manufacturer and sometimes people buy it in kit form for self builds.

The Building permit requirements of log cabins vary from county to county so keep this in mind while building and purchasing any log cabin. If you want it to get built by a builder then get quotes from different cabin builders and get feedback from their previous clients. Also check the credibility of the builder from local builders association. If you want to build a log cabin by taking a construction loan then collect the updated quotes from contractors like masons, plumbers, roofers and electricians. Also add the service charges along with the cost of the items. Sometimes sourcing of water is done by installing a septic tank. The foundations of log cabin require more digging so select the foundation slabs accordingly.

Buying log cabin

But before buying log cabins take an overview of the size and position of plot. Then consider the desired square footage and also access to services like power, water and sewers. While buying any log cabin for sale investigate different log cabin home plans and log cabin kits in the market. Even some builders specialized in cabin building and log cabin kit assembly suggests the suitable type of log cabin for the plot.

Now even one can check out on the internet about different log cabin plans and kits on sites. Even the details of log cabins with pictures are available to the customer on the website. There are different log cabins suitable for different purposes so select the log cabin according to the requirement. If you are buying a log cabin to be used as a home office then ensure enough power and telecom points as well as shelves and cupboards to place the stock and accessories. Even check the locking system of the cabin so as to keep the business safe. Check out your budget and desired features so as to make the log cabin selection easy as the company agents can also then easily locate the desired log cabin for the client.

Beyond Tradition: the Hardwood Flooring Advantage

Hardwood flooring is looked upon by many as the flooring option that lends a sense of permanence to an interior. Whether it’s a residential interior, or an office installation, hardwood flooring adds an air of class, as well as structural strength. For these reasons, hardwood flooring remains to be a classic choice. It is a flooring option that has the advantage of tradition behind it; many cultures and civilizations have used hardwood flooring, and have done so for centuries. But, there are reasons beyond those of tradition that make hardwood flooring a practical and decorative choice.

One of the most attractive attributes of hardwood flooring is the range of options open to you in terms of finish, surface, stain, and species. All of these aspects play a very important role in determining the look of your flooring. With all of these choices, hardwood flooring is known to make for a unique effect in each interior. To this point, an advantage you will experience will most likely be all of the compliments you’ll get because of your hardwood flooring for years to come.

Pre-finished and Unfinished Hardwood Flooring

Hardwood flooring can be purchased in either prefinished or unfinished varieties and there are distinct advantages in both. For pre-finished hardwood flooring, the obvious advantage is that of convenience. No sanding is required for these types of hardwood floors, and therefore more time is saved on preparation as well a mess; sanding a hardwood floor involves both. Also, no time must be allowed for the finish on your hardwood flooring to dry, a period which can take a half a day to longer, depending on the kind of finish you use.

As far as unfinished hardwood flooring goes, the most compelling advantage is that of a more uniform seal. This is the reason why many professionals offer unfinished hardwood flooring to clients; it is easier to make sure that all of the minute gaps between the hardwood flooring boards are sealed when finish is applied on the whole surface of the flooring, and not on a board-by-board basis. This means extra protection against moisture, the hardwood floor’s most dangerous enemy. In this sense, all of the preparation and mess is worth the effort.

Hardwood Flooring Surfaces and Stains

The diversity of hardwood flooring extends not only to finish, but also in the range of surfaces and choices in stain available to the customer. Some hardwood flooring is planed evenly at the mill, offering a smooth, refined surface that many consumers have come to admire in hardwood flooring. But another variety of hardwood flooring that is becoming popular with flooring professionals and homeowners is that of the handscraped hardwood flooring. In this case, the hardwood plank is actually worked by hand to create a contoured, seasoned surface that gives the hardwood flooring a more rustic, lived-in appearance.

The variations in hardwood flooring are further extended by the variety of stains available as well. Some stains serve to bring out the natural range of color in a chosen species. Others effectively change the color altogether, allowing a consumer to enjoy the benefits offered by one species, while enjoying the color of another. Hardwood flooring is probably one of the more flexible choices with regard to appearance and personal taste.

Hardwood Flooring: the Luxury of Choice

Overall, hardwood flooring is not just an option which relies upon tradition, although hardwood flooring has been relied upon for centuries because it is such a durable material. What hardwood flooring offers is the luxury of choice and an ease of integration into an interior design. Along with the advantages of appearance, hardwood is and continues to be a choice in flooring that can add structural strength to a residence or office.

Popular Species of Hardwood Flooring

Red and White Oak – These species are naturally pale in color, with hints of pink running through the Red Oak. Both are known for their utility across all kinds of applications. White Oak is known to be slightly harder than red oak, although red oak in turn is slightly easier to saw and nail.

American Cherry – Used for cabinet making as well as flooring, American Cherry is known to be an attractive species that is very easy to work with. It is not as hard as either red or white oak, but offers a greater tonal range of color that darkens over time to become even more rich in tone, due to photosensitivity.

Hard Maple – Harder still than oak, the uniform texture of maple as well as its naturally abrasion-resistant surface makes it an excellent choice for hardwood flooring. Early North American settlers relied upon maple for its hardy nature, and it continues to be popular today.

Brazilian Cherry AKA Jatoba – One of most notable features of this exotic species is its color – a rich, reddish brown that eventually ages into a lustrous burgundy. Another important as aspect of Jataba is how hard it is; it is harder than some species of mahogany. So for look as well as durability, Brazilian Cherry excels.

Hardwood flooring “Dos” and “Don’ts”

Do:

Choose a species of hardwood which will stand up to the type of foot traffic you expect in the area you wish to have it installed

Consult the terms and conditions of your purchase, including warranty information

Hire a professional installer if you have little or no experience in installing a hardwood floor. Hiring a professional flooring contractor will spare you the costly mistakes that often characterize installations by the inexperienced

In the case of an unfinished hardwood flooring option, consult with contractors or local retailers about which finish or stain is most appropriate for your choice of hardwood flooring

Choose an appropriate moisture barrier to rest between subfloor and hardwood flooring in order to add another level of protection

Expect color variations, as hardwood is a natural material. This can be to your advantage in terms of design. Open all boxes to view the tonal range in your particular batch and lay out the boards accordingly to suit your personal style

Allow your hardwood flooring to “acclimate” before you install it. This means opening the boxes of flooring to expose it to the temperature of the area where it is to be installed. Being a natural material, hardwood flooring expands and contracts according to climate

Use DRY mops and vacuums to keep your new hardwood flooring clear of dirt and dust

See to your pets – clip their nails, buy water dishes with a wide base to avoid spills, use area rugs or runners in higher pet traffic areas, and look out for “number one” (clean up those “accidents” as soon as they happen!)

Don’t:

Install hardwood flooring in an area that will be subject to excessive moisture. This also means avoiding an installation “below grade” (in a basement for instance) or in bathrooms

Install hardwood flooring in an area that is not environmentally controlled all year long – say, in a cottage or summer home that is not constantly maintained

Use wax-based cleaners or harsh detergents that will dull the finish of the hardwood flooring

Use steel wool or any other abrasives to clean a hardwood floor

Use excessive water when cleaning a hardwood floor

Walk on your hardwood flooring with athletic spikes or high-heels

Install hardwood flooring over radiant heat. For this, it is best to consider engineered hardwood flooring which is designed to allow for the temperature variations resulting from radiant heat

Leave damp rugs on the surface of hardwood flooring for an extended period.

For a more comprehensive list of dos and don’ts, and for more details in general, it’s always best to talk to the professionals directly. Contractors and sales reps that specialize in hardwood flooring can often serve as excellent resources before, during, and after your hardwood flooring purchase.

Carpets are indeed one of the most important things that we can find in our homes. These can make or break the look the whole room. This is why most people always make it a point to have carpets in their homes so that their homes will look as elegant and as nice as they should be. This is true only under one condition. Carpets usually look their best especially when they are still clean and new. A newly bought or installed carpet would always pull the look of the simplest room there is. Most carpet owners do make it a point to maintain the cleanliness of their carpets.

We all know how carpets attract dirt so much. Even if we try to take care and keep our carpets clean, there will always be a stain that will begin to pop out of it. Once a carpet looks very dirty, this can now destroy the look of the whole room. This can now leave the room very untidy and not well cleaned. This is the primary reason why you should always maintain the cleanliness of your carpets all the time. Whether you do this on your own or you hire cleaning services to do so, you need to make sure that your carpets look as new as they should.

One equipment that has really made carpet cleaning such an easier but effective cleaning job is a vacuum cleaner. These are tools or equipment which are used to suck out dirt which are trapped within the fibers of the carpet. This is very effective when you want to remove the solid particles, allergens and the dust which have stayed in the carpet. Although cleaning the carpet thoroughly, removing the stains do need extensive cleaning procedures in order to remove them in the best way possible.

As time passes by, the popularity of carpets in homes have changed the way that people are cleaning their carpets. In the past, carpet cleaning only meant having to use baking soda paste scrub in order to remove whatever is trapped in the carpet fibers. As time passed by, people have devised so many cleaning methods in order to ensure cleaner carpets. There are so many cleaning chemicals that can be bought so that people will not have a hard time cleaning their most prized possession. There are products which remove stains such as carpet shampoo, deep steam, carbonated water, carpet powders and protectors. All of these products claim to remove the stains and soils that have accumulated in the carpet for some time now.

There are basically different phases that need to be completed when cleaning a carpet. Of course, this is a very delicate thing in your household which needs to be cleaned properly. Without following these phases, you are just risking the worsening of the condition of your carpets so you should always keep these in mind and you are on your way in maintaining the best conditions for your precious carpet.

The first phase of carpet cleaning involves the pretreatment of your carpet. This may seem to be an unnecessary carpet cleaning step, but in reality, this is the most important cleaning step. This prepares and conditions your carpet so that it will be cleaned easily. What is done in this step is that the carpet is spayed or sprinkled with a particular solution that help in cleaning of the carpet. It basically lets the solid particles, soils, dirt and dust which are trapped inside the carpets to resurface and lift up. This will now make it easier for the particles to be cleaned.

The next phase would involve the cleaning process itself. The removal of the resurfaced dirt will be done here. As mentioned, there are different ways of cleaning the carpets but just so you know, there are just three major cleaning procedures done when it comes to carpet cleaning. Carpet cleaning would involve hot water extraction, dry extraction and cold water extraction. These methods usually work for a certain type of carpet cleaning job. It is best to research first on which is the suitable cleaning method to do so that cleaning will be done in the best way possible without leaving any dirt behind.

The last phase basically neutralizes the carpet leaving it to be as presentable as it must be. Cleaning will leave no dirt behind but instead remove cleaning residue. Carpet cleaning, involves methods mentioned, and these usually leaves some of the cleaning materials in the carpet. This can actually do more damage and even leave the carpets looking dirtier. This is why this last step should never be neglected and always be done to ensure that the carpet is left clean as it should be, without leaving behind particles. This even makes the carpet feel as soft and looking as new as it was.

Whether you would have your carpets cleaned by professionals or by yourself, you should be knowledgeable when it comes to carpet cleaning. There are now green cleaning products that you can use for your carpet cleaning job. If you want to clean the right way, then might as well check out these cleaning materials each time you use them for cleaning. The environment will be thankful or taking part in trying to protect it from the harm that the people has caused. You can now clean without that guilty feeling of doing so.

These are the things that you have to know when it comes to carpet cleaning. Being that carpets are very precious things, we should never neglect them. Cleaning them is a must which is why we should always make it a point to have them as clean as possible. Remember, a clean carpet will always make any room look as nice as it should be. This is why carpets are meant to be cleaned and left to look as new as they are. Check out the ways in which you can clean your carpets and never regret the decision that you have made.

Confused by all the different products and prices?

Plantation Blinds or Wood and Faux Wood Blinds, Value Blinds or Mini Blinds, the options can seem endless. We can help make some sense of your window blind decisions. Window Blinds can have varying degrees of quality and it is important to understand the difference. It is also important to understand the different effects window blinds have on lighting and mood.

2″ Wood Blinds and Faux Wood Blinds.

Express or Value Blinds vs. Custom Built Blinds – Express, Cut-Down and Value Blinds are simply a name given to partially pre-constructed Window Coverings. They are made in 2″ increments in width and are pulled from inventory, trimmed down on each side to fit your specific window. The length is also adjusted for your specific Height. These are typically the same quality material used in Premium Blind or Custom Blind production… but the cost savings come from lower cost of partial assembly in China. Since these are partially pre constructed, you don’t get to choose the location for the tilt mechanism or raise and lower control. Typically, these are offered in a more limited color selection and come with tilt cord controls on the Left and Raise and lower cords on the right. We offer some great Faux and Real Wood blinds in our Value line. They are made in McKinney Texas
Beware the cheap imitations.

Some large discount stores offer standard sized blinds for the most common size of windows. Not only are the materials generally inferior, but the fit of the blind rarely looks good in the room. For the same cost as a Value Blind, you can have a perfect fit… And you don’t even have to leave the house. Because all windows are not exactly the same dimensions and shelf stock blinds have to fit windows in certain size ranges, shelf window coverings do not fit as well as a custom made blind or shade. The widths of a Stock window blind must be shorter to accommodate as many windows as possible resulting in light gaps at the sides of the blind, shade, or shutter. The blind’s length also has to fit several different sizes and should be shortened so you don’t have a pile of slats sitting on the window sill. Shelf Stock blinds are one of the lowest priced blinds or coverings on the market. The lower price often means lighter weight cheaper materials, lower quality hardware, fewer sizes, colors and lack of a warranty. A Stock blinds have a life expectancy of 3 to 5 years. Advise.. Consider Using a Quality Value Faux Wood Blind from My Beautiful Blinds. We use Quality Name Brand manufacturers like Timber, Royal and Prestige.

Custom made blinds are built from the ground up from your measurements. Each window is measured for it’s width and height to the nearest 1/8″ and the blind is built to fit the opening. The Standard for most Blinds or Shades factories is to allow about 1/4″ on each side for proper operation, while the bottom rail (bottom blind piece) sits right on the window sill. Custom blinds are made with the best materials and hardware. The come from well known companies such as Timber Blinds, Hunter Douglas, Levelor, Royal Windows, Graber, Prestige and Bali. They are usually warranted for as long as you own the home. The color choices range from many shades of white 20+ stained wood tones. The material choices are Faux “PVC” blinds, Basswood blinds, other Asian Hard Wood blinds and even some composite products. You can get these through many design centers, local retailers and most affordably through online discount blind businesses.

Types of Window Blinds to Consider

Mini Blinds:

Most Mini blinds come in several slat widths, 1/2″, 1″, 2″. The slats are made from several different gauges (thickness) of aluminum. Some of the Shelf Stock mini blinds use plastic slats to further lower their cost. The higher the gauge the thicker the slat and the better the quality. Mini blinds were very popular in homes about 10 years ago and are still used extensively in commercial building. Color choices for mini blinds are unlimited. For affordable mini blinds visit http://www.mybeautifulblinds.com and click on Mini Blinds.

Venetian Blinds

Venetian blinds are just another way of saying Horizontal slat Blinds and encompass almost all the products in the market which meet the criteria of a Blind. We catagorize blinds into 4 basic types, PVC blinds, Composite blinds, Roman Blinds/Shades and wood blinds.

Faux Wood “PVC” Blinds

Faux or PVC blinds are made of a solid or foamed poly vinyl chloride plastic. PVC blinds have really become popular over the past 15 years. Slat widths are generally 2″, 2 1/2″, and sometimes 3″. The blind slat’s surface can be smooth or embossed with a wood grain. Color selection used to only include whites but there are several manufacturers making wood tone colors available. Faux Wood Blinds are very durable, UV resistant, waterproof (so they don’t flake, peal or yellow) and easy to clean. That durability makes them an excellent choice for kids rooms. The one main draw back to Faux Blinds is the weight of the slats. PVC slats are heavier than wood or composite slats. So large windows can be a little difficult to raise.

PVC blinds have many names.. but typically start with one of two sources. Familiar Names include Woodmates, Doverwood, Envirowood, Wood Like, Wood Look, Wood Plus, Infusion, Faux Wood, PVC Blinds… and many, many more. Be sure to confirm with your blinds dealer if their product is a solid foam PVC blind and as always, consider their warranty.

Composite Blinds

Composite blinds are made from a combination of wood by products, glues and Plastics. Composite Slats are a newer material being used for the window covering. Slat widths are generally 2″, 2 1/2″, and sometimes 3″ and come in flat or elliptical shapes. The blind slat’s surface is a smooth poly-coating or a solid composite material. Like PVC, the color selection is limited most often to whites but there are a few wood tone and stain colors available. Composite blinds are priced in the low mid range. They are very durable, UV resistant, water resistant, less likely to warp than wood and easy to clean. The one main draw back to composite blinds is the weight of the slats. Composite blinds slats are lighter than PVC blinds but heavier than wood and therefore a good choice for large windows coverings.

Wood Blinds

Both value & premium wood blinds are made from real woods. The value wood blind slats are made from assorted Oriental hardwoods. The premium wood blind slats are made from American Basswood. Basswood Is a unique cross grained wood which has rich detail and resists warping. Slat widths are generally 1″,2″, 2 1/2″, and sometimes 3″. The blind slat’s surface is either painted or stained. There is a huge color selection with several different whites and the most popular hardwood stain colors. You can even add Cloth tape ladders for a truly custom look. Need to match a cabinet or trim stain? Wood blinds are your best bet. Wood blinds are the most expensive blinds in this category. All wood slats can warp and may color fade over long periods of time. Wood blind slats are the lightest material and work well for large windows.

So you’ve decided to add a new conservatory to your home and are joining the growing number of people who have realised the most economical route is to buy a DIY conservatory and either build it yourself or employ a local builder to build it for you. Assuming you have already decided on the style and size of the conservatory all you have to do now is make a decision as to which DIY conservatory to buy.

It sounds simple enough but if your knowledge of conservatories is limited to what style will look good on your house and you are, like most people, searching the internet for the best deal the choice available could prove daunting and confusing. There is an almost endless choice of conservatory specifications for you to choose from ranging from low budget conservatories to high specification models and it is important not to simply look for a cheap DIY conservatory but one that will suit your specific requirements.

Using the search terms of DIY conservatory or self build conservatories in your favourite search engine is likely to return hundreds of thousands of links to DIY conservatory supplier sites plus many sponsored or paid for links which will probably direct you to auction sites as well. Research shows that most users don’t click back further than the first three pages of results but this will still give you around 30 different DIY conservatory supplier sites to look at and all will have different product specifications and different prices. So how do you make the right buying decision?

Obviously you will want to get the best value for money you can but going for a cheap DIY conservatory may not be the best choice depending on what you intend to use the conservatory for and whether you want it to be a year round extension to your home.

After all, the conservatory will be a permanent fixture on your property for many years to come and there are a lot of other design features that need to be taken into consideration. To put it another way, buying the cheapest conservatory now may seem like a great bargain but once installed, you will have to live with it until you decide to move on.

There are essentially two main routes to buying a self build conservatory:

DIY SUPERSTORES

Some of the search engine links will take you to the online sites of some of the major DIY superstores where you will be able to view their offerings which will normally be standard size models with minimum specifications designed to keep the price down. They will probably be quite basic in terms of design and limited in the number of options(if any)available. Opening vents and doors may be fitted with basic locking systems, you will probably be limited to a 16mm or 25mm polycarbonate roof in one finish and the double glazing is likely to be standard glass with no heat retention properties.

The fact is that these DIY conservatories are specifically made for the superstores where price is king and specification comes second. The components are usually sourced in bulk from developing countries where costs are very low which normally means they will be made from standard size windows and doors that simply lock together using frame connectors. This keeps the price down and whilst it does simplify installation, using a connector between each single window module does increase the sightline and reduce the glass area. The PVCu frame may only be 60mm deep and the windows and door will probably feature an external glazing bead which could allow the glass to be removed from the outside.

This type of product would not generally be offered by any respectable local home improvement installer because the specification is dated and the finished product would not have a quality feel and appearance.

Buying a DIY conservatory from a superstore does however have the advantage that you will probably be able to view a sample conservatory in their showroom although you may find it difficult to find anyone who will be able to discuss the project with you in any detail due to the thousands of different products these stores sell. It is simply a catalogue number to them which may come complete with a telephone help line.

Having said that, DIY superstores sell a huge number of self build conservatories every year and if you are on a very tight budget and are prepared to accept the lower specification you should be able to find a decent size DIY conservatory for less than £2,000.

SPECIALIST DIY CONSERVATORY SUPPLIER

The majority of your internet search results will contain links to dedicated DIY conservatory suppliers who specialise in supply only conservatories for the self build customer. These conservatories will usually be made to order and the specification will be much higher. As the product is made to order the options available to you will be much greater and will include extras like decorative glass and solar control roof glazing.

The PVCu frame will usually be 70mm deep which increases the structural integrity of the conservatory and the windows and doors will probably be internally glazed which prevents the glass from being removed from the outside.

Using a conservatory supplier who only supplies to the DIY market will ensure that you get all the assistance and advice you need from a conservatory supplier who knows what is needed and will provide base plans and installation instructions to make your installation as easy as possible.

Like any other purchase, you will only get what you pay for and it is important to consider the main requirements to ensure you buy a high quality self build conservatory:

70mm PVCu Windows & Door

Internally Glazed for security

28mm Sealed Units preferably using heat retaining glass

Minimum frame connectors to ensure traditional sightlines

High security locking

High specification conservatory roof system

35mm Polycarbonate roof glazing

Options worth considering are:

Decorative glass fanlights

Solar control glass roof

Roof vents with rain sensor control

Air conditioning unit

A new conservatory is proven to add value to your home, just how much will depend on the quality of the product and the usability of the conservatory throughout the year.

Saving a few hundred pounds on the cost of your self build conservatory now may be tempting but if the conservatory doesn’t retain heat in the winter or is like a sauna in the summer the amount of time you will be able to spend in it will be greatly reduced.

Always aim for the best specification you can afford rather than the cheapest DIY conservatory you can find to ensure that you will be able to get the maximum use of the conservatory throughout the year and remember that ultimately the higher the specification, the more desirable your property will be when you come to sell.

Although conservatories are currently popular design features, housing anything from kitchens to reading rooms: they were originally designed and constructed by Dutch farmers over 300 years ago to house plants. The farmers wanted to devise a method which would accommodate and protect their prized plants during the formidable European winters. The conservatory was the basis for the modern day greenhouse and served the farmers extremely well.

For many years the conservatory remained a functional and practical attachment. Later conservatories could be spotted all over Europe and North America as fashionable appendages to stylish homes. Today the conservatory’s original purpose has given way to being used as an indoor/outdoor space. The successful conservatory is one which is created and designed to bring out the best elements of the home and the outdoors.

Build a conservatory!

Conservatories are stunning additions to any home, but they do take a fair amount of planning and decision making. One of the most important decisions is the design of the conservatory itself. There are several points to consider when making design decisions; the most important is that the conservatory must compliment your main building. Victorian style conservatories added on to über modern houses can look garish rather than stylish and visa versa. Many conservatory companies offer a range of styles from Victorian to Georgian and Lean-to but it is better not to get bogged down with styles. It is advisable that you decide, with the help of a designer, on the rooms’ purpose, position and size before you select a style. Your conservatory must work effortlessly with your home rather than overshadow it. Once you have chosen a conservatory company, you will need to work closely with them to ensure that your conservatory will be a unique and fluid extension of your home.

Planning Permission

In the UK you don’t usually require planning permission as most properties have a permitted development right to extend, though the size of this varies according to where you live. If you have already added on to your home, you may have used up some, or all, of your development right, in which case you may need planning permission for your conservatory. It is vital that you check with your local authority when considering any building at all, as each authority has different rules. It is always better to be safe than sorry when to comes to planning permission.

Location/Direction

In the northern hemisphere, south facing conservatories get the most year round sun. In summer, they can get extremely hot so you’ll need to make sure you opt for opening windows and roof vents, which will give you excellent ventilation. Another two options are getting tinted (anti-sun) glass and/or air-conditioning. East facing conservatories get wonderful early morning sun which making them ideal settings for breakfast rooms. Easterly winds can be quite nippy so you may have to heat an east facing conservatory. West facing conservatories receive good sunlight on summer afternoons and evenings. Plants which thrive on indirect sunlight will love this location. A west facing conservatory is an amazing place to spend relaxing evenings, as they are pleasantly warm. North facing conservatories are without direct sunlight during the cold winter months and will need good heating and insulation to make up for this. In the summer these conservatories are warm and bright but they do not get direct sunlight.

The Main Structural Materials

The three main types of materials utilised in conservatory construction are PVC-U, Aluminium and Timber. PVC-U is available in many colours and is an extremely low maintenance material. This material is generally the most affordable option and works well with internal as well as external sealed glass units. Aluminium is another great low-maintenance option. It is lauded for its strength and slim sections which permit larger glazed areas. The most traditional material is timber which is a good insulator, but will need to be maintained. When making glazing decisions there are two main options, Polycarbonate and Glass. The former is a lightweight material which provides good insulation and is cheaper than glass but not as transparent or sound resistant. Glass is the preferred option as it is strong and transparent. There are several types of glass to choose from. Double glazed units will improve insulation but combining them with Low-E products and argon filling can improve this still further. Solar control products (tints or coatings) are most effective at controlling heat from the sun, internal heating and condensation. Another growing favourite amongst those who go for glass is the revolutionary self-cleaning glass which is making the lives of conservatory owners that much easier. This glass uses natural light and rainwater to keep glass cleaner and clearer and doesn’t require any daredevil stunts with a ladder and soapy water to keep your glass ceiling transparent and looking great.

There are a host of other decisions you will have to make about your conservatory including: ventilation, heating and décor but the initial decisions discussed here will prove invaluable to anyone thinking about building a conservatory.

A conservatory is a wonderful and aesthetically enhancing extension to any home providing that you take care when planning. There is nothing nicer than soaking up warm rays of sunshine in the total comfort of an indoor setting with stunning outdoor views.
