Tips for Achieving a French Country Style Bedroom

Country French is defined by its elegant look with touches of nature and country mixed together. To obtain this look in your bedroom you will need antiques, soft colors such as yellow, blue and white, florals and nature inspired pieces, gilded elements, rustic-country inspired pieces, and trims and finishes such as lace and fringe.

Starting from the floor up you will want to consider either rustic hardwood floors (dark stains will really make the room pop) or cream light colored carpet. Knotted pine floors in a dark rich stain look great and add the rustic touch that is a classic element in Country French décor.

Next, lets move to the walls. Choose a soft color for the walls such as a soft golden yellow or soft country blue. Both will look great in a Country French room. Yellow will give you a more sunny warm feeling and blue will give you a more relaxing cool feel to your room.

Make sure you paint all the wood trim in the room such as baseboards, chair rails, door and window trim and crown molding, a crisp white. White entry door and white louver closet doors should also be used.

Make sure you use a lot of fabrics to soften the room. Fabrics should be in a floral, stripe, ginham or toile design.

For window treatments, use a bold pattern such as a bold floral with a fringe detail.

Use an upholstered chair, or upholstered chair with wood trim, set next to a small round side table for a reading area. For the upholstery on the chair do not use as bold of a pattern as you did the window treatments. If you used floral on the windows, use a gingham on the chair. You can add a pillow to the chair in the same fabric as used in the drapes to bring the two together.

The bed should be a rustic wood or an upholstered head board design. Consider using a toile print for the head board and a white lacey coverlet for the bedding. Stack several pillows on the bed combining white pillows with floral prints and gingham prints to bring all the fabric choices in the room together.

For art work on the walls you will want to choose pictures of flowers or the country side, preferably with gold frames. You could also use antique blue and white china plates in a grouping as wall décor.

If you have a television in your room you will want to disguise or hide it. Consider putting an old rustic armoire or china cabinet in your room to hold the tv. If you use a piece that traditionally has glass doors consider covering the doors with a frost and some chicken wire to obscure the view so that when the doors are closed you do not see the tv.

For lighting you will want to use lamps with lamp shades that have fringe around the bottom and a chandelier with crystal accents.

Adding antique accessories, plates, roosters, architectural pieces will complete the look. Remember not to use anything that looks new, you want the rustic roughed up look. Use gold candle stick holders for candles.
