Going About Kitchen Cabinet Remodeling The Smart Way

Kitchen Cabinet RemodelingKitchen cabinets are one of the most noticeable and defining characteristics of a kitchen. Cabinets in combination with kitchen countertops represent approximately 50% of the cost of the average kitchen remodeling project. As such, knowing the different cabinet options available to you is very important.

The first step in kitchen cabinet remodeling is to choose a style, whether it be contemporary simplicity or Victorian classic. If you need help defining your particular style, grab some architecture and design magazines and do some research online. When choosing a cabinet style, you will need to factor in the overall theme and d├ęcor of your home. You definitely do not want to install cabinets and later realize that they clash with the rest of the items in your house.

After determining your style, you will need to consider spacing. Are you expanding the kitchen or simply remodeling the existing space? How much space can you allocate to your kitchen cabinets? Once you have an idea of space constraints, begin drawing up a floor plan. Measure the dimensions of the room and sketch the layout you are going for. Bring this floor plan with you when you begin searching for your kitchen cabinets. As you will soon discover, kitchen cabinets can be stock, semi-custom, or completely customized. Stock cabinets come in standard sizes and shapes, with few design options and only a handful of wood and stain choices. Stock cabinets are the least expensive and generally can be delivered in two weeks or less. Semi-custom cabinets are a little more expensive than stock cabinets and offer a few options such as divided knife drawers. If the stock and semi-custom cabinets do not work for you, you either have to re-do your layout or go the custom design route. Custom cabinets can be very expensive and are generally built with dovetailed drawers and mortise and tendon construction. Options and sizing can be tailored to your specific needs. Do you enjoy cooking? Your cabinets can have built in spice racks and pull-out chopping blocks and tray accessories for garlic, potatoes, onions, etc. Do you enjoy drinking wine? Your kitchen cabinet can be designed to have a built in wine rack.

When shopping for cabinets, check out the displays, test the doors and drawers to see if they open and close smoothly and quietly. Ask what kind of wood the cabinet is constructed out of, maple, cherry, birch, oak, alder, etc. Woods vary widely in terms of pricing, texture, color, durability, weight, etc. Feel the wood surface with your hand; if it’s coarse or rough, look somewhere else. High quality cabinets should have solid frames, doors, and drawer fronts. Examine the frames of the cabinet doors. In general, cabinet doors with frames have a traditional look that blends well with classic styles. On the other hand, frameless doors have a cleaner appearance that is more in line with modern styles.

Once you have researched and considered the various kitchen cabinet options available to you, you need to make a list of the options most important to you. If you are within your budget, it is time to start comparing cabinet prices both at retail locations and online. With the kitchen cabinets taken care of, you should begin searching for professional kitchen contractors and requesting quotes.
