How to Deal with Carpenter Ants

carpenter antsOne of the largest ants that are commonly found in the United States is the carpenter ant. They are well known for invading and infesting homes and if they are not discover early, may cause serious damage to the building structural. Although there are many different species around, the two most commonly found in the country are the black carpenter ants and Florida carpenter ants. They use wood to build their nests and tunnel through it in their search for new sources of food. This is proved by piles of frass, which is the debris that the carpenter ants have chewed out of typically damp. dead wood.

Keeping these ants away from the house is the first step to ensure a carpenter-ant-free home. See to it that nearby branches of trees and shrubs do not make contact with the structure as these can serve as pathways for the ants, shut out cracks and holes in the home that may become entrances for these ants, store food in properly sealed containers to eliminate possible food sources of carpenter ants, destroy nearby nests and colonies (those found in tree stumps and rotting tree barks) and ensure proper ventilation in and around the house to discourage moisture from accumulating on wood and wooden furniture.

Ridding your home of carpenter ants can be challenging. For many insect infestations, baiting works well, but carpenter ants eat such a varied diet that baiting is found to have very little effect. Over the counter sprays kill the ants, but you are most likely killing off the worker ants within your home and not affecting the primary nest outside. When you have discovered their nests, put poison down outside each nest as indicated on the label. Do this for several days in a row until you do not see anymore carpenter ants. If you are still seeing them, you have missed a nest.
