Low Maintenance Landscape Ideas Anyone Can Do

Low Maintenance LandscapingNow that you have a place you can finally call your own, you want to work on your landscaping as it brings beauty to your home and adds to its value. If you are on a tight budget, do not let that hold you back from making your dream landscape come true. You can prepare your yard for low-impact landscaping. Consider the following steps for low-cost, low impact landscaping for your home.

The first thing to do is to decide first what you want to do with your land. Plants grow well on the right temperature, so you may need to do some research on plants that grow well on your temperature zone. Check the zone you are in at the USDA Plant Hardiness Temperature Zone Map to make sure you grow the right plants on your temperature zone.

Plant trees strategically as trees can cool the surrounding air of your home. Deciduous trees on the south and west portion of your home can provide shade and cool air in summer, and allows the warming sunlight during the coldest season of the year. Placing three trees on strategic locations can reduce your energy consumption and offer a yearly savings of $100 to $250 while absorbing heat-trapping carbon dioxide and lessen storm-water overflow.

Take a look at existing plants that you already have in your land. Check the condition of the plants and preserve them if they are in good condition. If the land has trees and shrubs, trim any dead branches.
You can minimize outdoor water use significantly by placing native plants and ground cover that can adapt to grow on rainwater alone. Reseed or place drought-resistant grass. Tall fescue adapts well on colder regions while Bermuda grass adapts well on hotter environment. One way to help the soil stay cool and maintain sufficient supply of water is to place mulch around flowers and trees.

You can opt to have trees and bushes as alternative fencing and edging. Natural fences also provide food and shelter for inhabitants that may be living around the area. If you worry about local pest damaging your plants, instead of using toxic pesticides use plants to control pests. Your yard should have flowers because they attract pest-eating insect. Native plants are resistant to damage by local pests.

Instead of using gas-powered push mowers, use hand- or electric powered lawn mower. According to the Environmental Protection Agency, gas-powered lawn equipment is estimated to exude as much nitrogen oxide, carbon monoxide, and hydrocarbons per hour like 11 cars and riding mowers exude as much as 34 cars.

Use natural fertilizers as an alternative to chemical fertilizers. Leave grass trimmings and leaves on your lawn or turn them into fertilizers. This is a good way you can supply nutrients without using chemical fertilizers. Also, avoid carbon-emitting trips to the dump, and form smaller landfill waste.
Even if you are tight on budget, you can create a safe and beautiful garden for your home. Creating low impact, low maintenance landscaping for your home is good for the environment and a cost-effective approach to beautify your home.
