Organize Your Closet With Walk-In Closet Organizers

Walk-In ClosetMaking home additions by adding a walk-in closet to your home is a great idea to increase closet storage space and provide more utility use of the closet. Home construction contractors usually use the minimum floor space for walk in closets. As a result you are stuck with small closets with little storage space. Modifying your closets to walk-in closets is a relatively easy DIY task. Essentially it entails modifying the closet outside closet wall a few inches and adding additional shelving or hanging racks to the closet.

Walk-in closets are preferred for bedrooms because they allow so much more storage space and are very versatile in their use. There are many home redesign contractors that are skilled and knowledgeable in the design and construction of closet modifications, but if you are handy with basic construction tools you can do the job yourself at a fraction of the cost a contractor will charge for doing the work.

Here are some tips to consider adding a walk-closet to your home:

  • The existing closet can be expanded into the room so that it becomes a walk-in simply by reconstructing the outside closet walls. The new closet walls can be made to fit the space in a square or rounded shape in any way that works with the existing closet and room.
  • If you use your imagination you will be surprised at the spaces in your home that can become a walk-in closet. This includes space underneath staircases, attic space, or space that cuts into an adjoining room as well.
  • Don’t limit yourself to just the one room when considering a walk-in closet design. A walk-in closet is a great way to provide additional space for children to keep their clothes and other things organized to have a neater room.
  • Draw a simple plan for the closet modification. Lay out the new closet wall on the floor.
  • Purchase the necessary supplies which in most cases is a few 2X4s, a few pieces of sheets sheetrock, and some baseboard trim. You can use the existing closet doors in the new closet.
  • Removing any carpeting by cutting it along the line where the finish wall will be. Don’t overcut the carpet as you can do a final trim cut after the new wall is constructed.
  • Remove the existing wall material and discard.
  • Construct the new wall(s) in place by attaching the 2×4 to the floor and the ceiling. Cut and install the vertical 2x4s by nailing at the top and bottom. Install and finish the sheetrock and install the closet door.
  • Now that the new walk-in closet is constructed finish the interior to your preference with additional shelving and hanging rods.

That is all there is to it. If you do this task yourself you saved a lot of money and have the walk-in closet you want. All the supplies can be purchased at you home improvement center and if you need some advise they will be more than happy to provide that too. Adding a walk-in closet to your home will provide you with a lot more closet space and the convenience of easy access to it.
