Room Makeover Ideas – Customize a Bedroom

custom bed design for minimalist bedroomLooking for fun customizable bedroom makeover ideas that you can do to make a room really special? The key to a custom room makeover is to create a unique space by incorporating decor that reflects the owner’s personality. In this case, we are redesigning my son’s bedroom and I’m going to share with you some tips and ideas that we used to make his room special. Ben is a teenager and he loves soccer, (specifically goal keeping), the Beatles, and playing guitar. For color he requested his favorite soccer team’s colors: red and black, with stripes… wait…what? That’s right — you heard correctly — red and black stripes!

Now, for some background on the project… this was a birthday present and we made it similar to an episode of TLC’s “While You Were Out.” Meaning that my husband and I transformed the whole room in two days while Ben was at soccer camp. Of course we purchased furnishings, curtains, and wall decor ahead of time to be sure they arrived for the unveiling, but all of the painting, furniture moving and decorating were done in those two long days!

Whenever I begin decorating a room, I focus on one object or piece of art. In this case, I used a photograph of Ben playing soccer. I cropped the photo so that only his foot and the ball are showing. To this I added a dramatic paint filter in Photoshop, changed the colors to black, red, white and green and printed it on canvas. This was our starting point and our first custom decor piece.

Then came the real challenge – the red and black walls! We started with red, using Behr paint from the Home Depot. Red is a tricky color which usually takes at least two coats to cover the walls. For the black stripes, we chose one wall and made really wide vertical black stripes. To do this, we simply dropped two plumb lines and taped along the lines and painted the black within the tape. We chose black Ashley Furniture from J&J Discount in Spofford, NH for the bed, dresser and side dresser, a black bookcase, desk, and chair from Target, along with some lamps and red and black bedding. We picked black curtains from Bed, Bath, and Beyond, which added to the whole black stripe effect on the walls. So the color and furnishings are complete.

Now for more ways to customize… A great option for custom wall decorating is a fathead from Fathead.com. These are vinyl wall decals which can be as large as six feet! We could have ordered a fathead of a professional soccer player, but Fathead.com also allows you to use your own photographs. We chose a photo of Ben making a goal save. I added a cartoon effect (through Photoshop) and submitted it to Fathead.com and they took care of the rest. They mail you the fathead in a roll and you simply unroll it, peel it, and stick it on the wall! Instant wall decor!

Another great place for wall decals is Artfire.com. We bought a Beatles silhouette wall decal for another wall in Ben’s room. We placed his two guitars directly below the decal for a cozy music nook.

To finish off the room, we added little touches, such as tacking Ben’s first pair of goalie gloves to the wall, as well as awards from middle school. Trophies were shelved in the bookcase and Beatles and soccer posters were hung on the remaining walls. We left plenty of free wall space for a clutter-free feel and for future interests.
