What Are Primitive Home Decorations?

What Are Primitive Home Decorations?Decorating with primitive style is the ideal way to bring a warm and charming feel to your home. It reminds us of a simpler time when every thing seemed less complicated. People had more time to sit and chat and everything was made by hand. If a girl needed a new dress, her mother would make her one not, run her over to the mall. Keeping a modern home in this primitive style can bring back those feelings of homespun love.

In the past primitive or country decorating might have been called “Early American” getting it’s start from our ancestors. Pioneers, farmers, trades people all contributed to the style we today call “primitive.” Having primitive decor in your home is a constant reminder of a simpler time, when everything was handmade and the mistakes where something that made an item more special. What is not to fall in love with?

This American tradition got it start around the time of the signing of The Declaration of Independence when America was new and excitement was everywhere. It was the beginning of a new way of life that was both dangerous and full of the joy of achievement. People had to cling together in order to survive in this harsh environment. If you wanted something you had to make it. There were no department stores and the general markets were often times several miles away. Decorating a home in a primitive way can make you feel as though the hustle and bustle of today’s world is a lifetime away.

At one time, attractiveness of a family’s home depended solely on the sewing, cooking and cleaning skills of the mother. Even the toys given to the children were made by hand. This is where a persons creativity is truly put to the test. Mothers were often forced to make dolls of whatever fabric they had available like a flour sack and fathers would use their carving skills to create a spinning top or boat for the children. These toys would be used for years and may be the only toys a child would own. These are the same kind of details that can make a modern day primitive style home more attractive, small toys, tins, dolls. The more worn the better. Yellowing, fading, rusting are all welcomed in a primitive style home.

Most of all a primitive style home needs to smell good. As though grandma is working her fingers to the bone in the kitchen. Aromas of apples simmering, cinnamon, nutmeg and vanilla waft about in a proper primitive home. Lavender and other herbs can be not only used as a fragrance but, also a decoration. Anything from nature is always in style. Fresh cut flowers to tree branches can be spotted throughout the prim home.

One could say that the primitive style of decorating is out of style. It must be pushed away like a beautiful old building to make way for the modern new things. However, within a mile or two of any city, big or small, the primitive tradition is alive and well in 2011. Things that work never go out of style. Like families, love, home and hearth the primitive style is here to stay as a timeless tradition and a salute to our past.

These are all the characteristics that I try to include in all my primitive folk art paintings. I love small towns. I use them in a lot of my paintings. I like to think about what might be happening in each of the homes or buildings and try to create a story line. I love to paint children and animals playing all through the scene.
